During the first day of this two day IOP, the aircraft flew a low-level jet pattern, and then a circumnavigation pattern around Taiwan, after no convection had developed in response to the passage of the Mei-Yu front over Taiwan. A few small convective cells developed over the straits and were observed by the ground-based Doppler radars. On the second day of the IOP, a second aircraft mission was flown to investigate the structure of a weak squall line that had developed over the straits and was moving towards the southernmost part of Taiwan. The aircraft was able to make several “L” patterns and some in-cloud measurements before the system completely fell apart and moved onshore.
